Need a bit more information before you buy? Here’s a Clarisonic review to help you get to know the good and bad about these cleansers.
Clarisonicis a household name at this point. Since it came out in 2004, it’s enjoyed quite a bit of success, mostly starting from 2011 and on. These fabulous facial cleaning brushes make bold claims about improving your skin, shrinking pores, etc. I’m not surprised that so many women and men want to give it a try. Let’s see if the Clarisonic cleansers are worth trying, or if they’re overrated for the money.
What Is a Clarisonic Cleanser?
Clarisonic cleansing brushes are small handheld devices with a replaceable brush head. The device has a little motor that powers the brush head, causing it to move up to 300 times per second, using sonic technology. That might sound ridiculous, but keep in mind that the movements we’re talking about are really small, so it’s not inconceivable that it could move 300 times in one second.
When you touch the brush head to your skin, it just feels like a soft, steady vibration. The quick movements help to dislodge dirt, dead skin, and general yuckiness from your face. It’s meant to help you clean out your pores more deeply and thoroughly than you would otherwise be able to with your hands or a cleaning rag.
Using a Clarisonic Cleansing System
To use a Clarisonic, you just have to charge it, put on the brush head you want (or use the standard one that comes with the device), and turn it on. You’ll need to put some water and usually a cleansing product on your face or the brush head itself so that the Clarisonic has something to work with. You shouldn’t use it on dry skin, since it may irritate you.
The Clarisonic company recommends you use it once or twice per day, depending on how your skin responds to it. This isn’t an exfoliating product on its own unless you use an exfoliating cleanser or brush head, so it shouldn’t be too harsh for daily use. Use it for about 20 seconds each on your forehead, nose, and chin as well as 10 seconds on each cheek. It’s good to make small circular motions while you’re moving it around your face to help dislodge dirt more evenly.
Are Clarisonic Brushes Exfoliators?
The standard Clarisonic brush heads are not meant to exfoliate your skin. They’re designed to cleanse your skin and remove dirt from your skin and pores, not to scrape off dead skin as an exfoliator would do. But, you can use a normal brush head with an exfoliating product and get similar results. Or, switch to a brush head meant for exfoliation. If you do either of these two things, don’t use it more than once every few days or you can really irritate your skin.
How Clarisonic Cleansers Work – And What They Do
So, since you now know what they do and how they do it… How does that Clarisonic really work to clean your skin? And why is it any better than just using your hands, a sponge, or a rag?
There’s a few things to look at here. When you’re using the Clarisonic right, it should be working with your skin’s natural elasticity to knock loose a lot of different dirt particles. The little bristles get into the grooves of your skin and clean inside your pores. At least, that’s what they’re supposed to do. Some of the results you can expect will vary a lot based on the brush head you use.
Finding out the right brush head for your skin is actually a crucial step in making the Clarisonic work for you. Your face may not take well to all the different brushes, so you have to figure out which one is going to work for your skin type first. Also, you’re supposed to change the brushes up every 3 months to keep them up to shape.
Essentially, all the different Clarisonic devices have the same purpose: cleaning your face. Some women swear by them, while others don’t feel the difference quite as much. The company itself says they’re at least 6 times as good at removing makeup with the standard brush than you are with your hands alone. It’s difficult to verify these claims, since there isn’t a lot of independent testing done on it, but if you trust anecdotal evidence than you might be convinced that it’s a good thing to try.
Should You Try a Clarisonic?
There are a few considerations you should make. If you wear makeup, sunscreen, or any other products on your face regularly, a Clarisonic may be a fantastic choice to help you clean it off properly. It’s much more difficult to clean this stuff off with just your hands. A Clarisonic is going to clear out your pores really well, especially when you’re using foundation. The unfortunate problem is you can’t use it around your eyes.
Besides the makeup and other products, you need to see what kind of skin type you have. If you use harsh acne products like Retin-A, if you have a skin condition, or if you have very sensitive skin, the Clarisonic might be too rough for your face. It may cause you to get irritated skin or possibly breakout, so you should skip it if any of those things apply to you.
If you have pores that look large, the Clarisonic may also be a good thing for you to try. It can reduce the appearance of pores by cleaning them out fully. There’s no way to physically shrink pores (that’s a FACT!), but by cleaning them our well you can make your pores look smaller.

From the five Clarisonic review snippets I wrote above, I would recommend the Mia 2. It’s got a few more features over the Mia 1, and it’s easy for everyone to use. Although the Mia FIT is easier to travel with, the Mia 2 seems longer-lasting and generally more suitable for everyone that needs facial cleansing. The Clarisonic Alpha FIT is the best choice for men, though!
